“This opera is a true hero’s journey – literally.” – Sophie Emilie Beha, Opernwelt
Iwein is young, he is strong and he is a knight – the best of the best! But he is terribly bored at Arthur’s court and sets off in search of adventure. He not only finds new stories, but also Laudine, the love of his life. However, his friend Gawein bursts into his new happiness and lures him back into the world of competitions. They are so busy fighting for honor that Iwein almost loses Laudine. On the long journey back to her, Iwein not only fights dragons and two-faced knights, but also meets a very special friend.
Georg Büchner Prize winner Felicitas Hoppe has turned Hartmann von Aue’s 12th century knightly epic into a clever and imaginative story that makes the great themes of honor and friendship and the battle for good and evil understandable for young readers without neglecting their grandeur and depth. The librettist Andrea Heuser expands the story through the perspective of today’s world: the children of the present open up – if only for a moment – a path to a magical world in which they can lose themselves or find themselves.
IWEIN LÖWENRITTER is the fifth family opera to be staged at Theater Bonn as part of the Young Opera Rhine-Ruhr cooperation project. This time, Moritz Eggert, who has composed several operas as well as a soccer oratorio, was commissioned to compose the world premiere.
